The appropriate use of agricultural produce, particularly stalks of sweet sorghum for the production of ethanol for biofuel will neither affect the prices and availbility of food, nor the environment.

The Chairman of Global Biofuels Limited Dr. Joseoh Sanusi, made this submission at Ilemeso, Ekiti State, on Tuesday, at the ground breaking ceremony of its ethanol production plant, through the cultivation, processing and refining of sweet sorghum.

Represented by the Vice-Chairman, Mr. Solomon Oladunni, Sanusi said the company had come to pioner ethanol fuel production in Nigeria and make jobs and food availble to Nigerias.

He disclosed that the company had been allocated 11,000 hectares of land by the Ekiti State Government for the cultivation of sweet sorghum, which stalks would form the core materials for ethanol production

Sanusi also disclosed that over 8,000 persons would be directly engaged by the company, and another 50,000 indirect when if finally commenced production fo biofuel in September 2009.

Sanusi said, "This project, on completion, is expected to produce fuel grade ethanol that would be utilised to blend fossil fuels for the purpose of reducing carbon emission into the atmosphere."

"It would also assist in the production of more food for the country, as it si only the stalks of the sweet sorghum that would be used, leaving the grains for food."
